PROPS- WHAT SHOULD I BRING

Photography props have gotten a bad reputation. We often think of props as something that is given to us to hold or use in our photoshoot that really have nothing to do with us. Let's dispel any myths about photography props and talk about why we use them.

1. Props are another word for storytelling. We want to bring items of interest into the image that speak to the story we are telling and that are specific to the subject being photographed.

2. Props add layers. A book, flowers, balloons, confetti, string lights, vintage finds, etc. Props add to the story in the form of layering.

3. Props can be accessories. Items such as scarves, satchels, glasses, hats, flower crowns, jewelry, jackets, vests, etc. are all forms of props. Though we not dress like this everyday, layering of such props helps to add interest and dimension to the image.

4. Props are often items you already have. This is your story, so you might already have items to bring that speak to you.

5. Props should never be the story. YOU are the story. For instance, senior graduation photos- your cap and gown are part of the story, part of the reason you are commemorating this time. It makes complete sense to bring graduation props with you to the session.

6. Props give you something to hold or focus on. If you enjoy reading, bring several books. If you love fashion, bring multiple accessories. If you are into baseball, bring your bat and glove. If you have a fantastic sneaker collection, bring several pairs to change into.

Here is a small list of items that you may want to incorporate:

Clothing- layering, jackets, vests, shoes

Accessories- necklaces, scarves, hats, sunglasses, earring, bracelets, watches

Furniture- a moss covered chair, small settee, steps, stool, ladder

Signs- graduation, birthday, new career, new building, new house, favorite quote, bible verse

Food- favorite beverage, wine, coffee, snack, pizza, donuts

Celebration items- sparklers, smoke bombs, bubbles, balloons, holiday specific

Pets- bring your beloved pet or we will go to him/her.

Miscellaneous- books, sports gear, flowers, camera, car, bike, motorcycle, umbrella

Hopefully this helps to understand how and why photographers use props and the important role they play in storytelling.
